Daddy didn't use the VA Hospitals either - paid his way after being discharged from service in 1945.He had to return to the VA Hospital for followup care as he was severely wounded in Brest France and was in the hospital in England for some time. Although he returned to active duty he still had shrapnel from mortar shell embedded throughout his body and head.So apparently he had to have followup treatment after he was discharged for these injuries at a VA Hospital. He never returned to a VA hospital as he thought the care was less than adequate.
He died in 1996 at the Belleglade Regional Hospital in Florida.
If you have your fatherinlaw's MID and SSN, you can go online and order his discharge and separation papers, which they do have. Also, they have sent a request for the medals he did not receive. I hope I receive them.It took 5 weeks to get the info and I received just a few little medic notes, but none about his hospitalization in England.I'm trying to trace what I can from the info on the separation papers.
