Hi Bill; I was in the 3rd Bomb. Gp.5th Air Force. Can't help you with the burned POWs, but I did have contact with the "Ghost Soldiers".Feb.18, 1945 I boarded the Gen. A.E. Anderson troop ship at Hollandia, New Guinea to head for home after 37 months in the S.W.P.A.After the returnees were all on board, another group of G.I.s came on board. Many had to be carried on on liters, many had limbs missing and all were malnourished. It was your "Ghost Soldiers" heading for home.
They had 3 years back pay coming and had recieved a petty good chunk of it before boarding the ship.I witnessed some high stakes poker games on that trip - way out of my league. One little guy hand his left arm missing just above the wrist, but it sure didn't hinder his poker playing skills.
