All records, except that one little note has Company L, 175th, 29th after after April 1943.Before April 1943, Company L 311th, 78th.
With the info you given me, it appears this was just an error by the medic, because we definitely know he was combat infantry - due to his medals and assignments in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and Ardennes.
I did find an interesting old post for the Ligtning Division 78th Assoc Guestbook dated 12-1-2001 by Fritz Weinschenk who was originally with the 78th who was transferred in 1944 to the 30th infantry:"I was one of approximately 8 radio operators drawn from 78th in Jan 1944 to join 293rd Joint Assault in 2nd wave June 6 1944 then shipped to New Guinea and made invasion of Lingayen Gulf Phillipines.I am know 81 years old".
It's possible dad was one of the 8 operators he is speaking of and dad was assigned to Co L 175th, 29th who after Omaha went on to the other theatres.
Thanks for sharing what you know.
