Regarding your posting about your grandfather I believe I have some information to flesh out your study of his time in service.
Based on his POW experience I was able to find his POW record card which gives the date of his plane going down.This in turn led to a name/event association and a match to Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) # 2880.
2LT Matthew J. Bauer (ASN: O-688731)was captured on 8FEB44.
He was flying on B-17G serial number 42-39782.**
This was assigned to the 526th Bomb Squadron of the 379th Bomb Group. (Tail code triagle K) out of Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire, England, USAAF Station 117.
The nose art name of the plane was PISTOL PACKIN' MAMA. (Just one of many so named in the 8th AF--great song by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters)
The mission was #214 for the 8th Air Force (#67 for the 379th Bomb Group).Here is the official summary of the mission:
TUESDAY, 8 FEBRUARY 1944
EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS (ETO)
STRATEGIC OPERATIONS (Eighth Air Force)
88 of 236 B-17s hit the marshalling yards at Frankfurt, Germany using blind-bombing techniques; 107 other B-17s hit targets of opportunity; they claim 1-3-0 Luftwaffe aircraft; 13 B-17s are lost, 2 damaged beyond repair and 108 damaged; casualties are 11 KIA, 4 WIA and 130 MIA;
I expect that he was initially among the 130 MIAs listed above, until word was received of his POW status.
The 379th has two healthy volumes of their wartime history and no doubt the loss of this plane and the status of the crew will be discussed.
David R. Berry Dayton, OH OHBERRY@aol.com ** Strangely enough I just yesterday completed an extended study for a person looking for information on the loss of another 379th BG plane, which coincidentally involved 42-39783 "Blues in the Knight"--the next plane off the line after your grandfather's..There were nearly 13000 B-17s built during the war....imagine the odds of that!
