Sue, first off, sorry for the late reply and you ask a hard question.
Let us say that a strip 10 miles wide and 70 miles long was a US area. Inside of this area controlled by the Panama Canal Commission (just like any other part of the US government i.e. the FCC, the FAA, the GAO) were many military bases, all on this US territory.
Ancon is reall an area name. As in the Ancon Hill area or refered to as just Ancon. The Ancon area was (and is) a whole bunch of real jungle but also contains what used to be the Pan Canal Headquarters (not sure what they call it now, maybe even the same), the Gorgas Hospital area and on top of the hill, the area called Quarry Heights. Quarry heights was the Southern Command Headquarters and contained a small housing area generally for the higher up officers. If you looke at Quarry Heights, it would look like one half of the top of a mountain was removed just like you cut a birthday cake. This was where most of the rock for the southern end of the canal locks was quarried (hence the name Quarry Heights. The actual command buildings were built into the rock face of what was left of the mountains and were actually tunnels. All of these places were located in the Ancon area.
