Since Henry was discharged at Fort Sam, I assume that he was a Texan.
Upon our return from service in WW II, we were required to present copies of our discharges to our local County Clerk for recording.
Fort Sam Houston is in Bexar County. If that was his home county, I feel that the information you seek is available.
I wouldn't hold out too much hope for anything coming out of St. Louis.
Perhaps an older family member still has letters from him, which may well ID his unit.
If he drew a veteran's pension, your local V-A Regional Office may be of some help.
Noting that he was discharged just days before the war ended 15 Aug 45, may suggest that he was let out for medical reasons. If so, that would open other avenues for follow up, includng accessing any related medical records.
Who ended up with his Discharge and Separation Papers ?
Those are documents which would not normally be trashed.
Again, perhaps some family member has them. They would represent a font of valuable information for you.
What sort of history have you developed on him which I may draw upon?
Please let me know if I may be of further service in your quest.
