I answered Helen's request for info, but since her inquiry was attached to an earlier post, all have been added to a thread which is "buried". In trying to assure she saw my reply, I am reiterating it here. Thanks to all for your patience.
Helen wrote, "PRIVATE CHARLES EUGENE HAMMOCK, Headquarters CO., 2nd Bn., 21st Marine 3rd Division Birth, November 14, 1926, Death August 11, 1944 --I would appreciate ANY help! Sincerely, Helen"
Helen, next-of-kin are listed in the National Archives as: Mr. and Mrs. Hobert A. Hammock General Delivery Bryson City, NC
You should be able to get his personnel record through the NPRC in St. Louis. (They had a disastrous fire in 1973. However, Navy Dept personnel records - which includes marines - were not affected.) Info on that resource can be found at this web page: http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/index.htmlhttp://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/index.html
You can also send for his Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF). As others in this forum have addressed, the info found in an IDPF can be graphic. If you pursue this resource, you should be prepared for that possibility. Send your request to: US Total Army Personnel Command ATTN: TAPC-PAO (FOIA) 200 Stovall Street Alexandria, VA 22332-0404 Be sure to cite the Freedom of Information Act in your request.
(The above references "Army" but they also hold Marine Corps IDPF's for WWII.)
