I am trying to find out more about the World War II military service of my late father--Raleigh Amos Cosby. Most of his U.A. Army records were destroyed years ago during a catastrophic fire at the Military Records Center in St. Louis.
I do have info from his discharge and what I believe are his mustering out papers.
From these documents I know he was in Hq. Co. Sh Bn 592 EBSR. I have found out this outfit had at least two name changes before becoming the Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. But I know almost nothing more about the 592nd....either little was written of I just don't know where to find it.
I also know he was in the CCC when the war started and was inducted, I believe, at Galconda in southern Illinois. He was in Australia by February 6 (so much for lengthy training, eh?) and remained in the Pacific until the war's end in 1945.
I know he received bronze stars from campaigns in Luzon, South Philippines, Bismarck Archipelago and New Guinea, but that's about it.
Anything anyone can tell me about this outfit, or tips about where I might be able to find more info, is greatly appreciated.
It would be great to talk with someone from this outfit and would be ideal if that is someone who was in Hq CO (Headquarters Company). I have found a couple photos of folks in Companies E and F in the 592nd but that's about it.
