Pine Camp was an Armored Division camp, located at Watertown, N.Y..
Since he obviously joined the 88th ID in April-45, he would have gone over as a replacement, and would have had very few points toward rotation right after the war ended.
The division arrived at Naples, Italy, 6 Feb 44, and a detachment went to the line at Cassino,27 Feb 44.
It remained in Italy throughout 1946.
Rome-Arno, 22 Jan 44/ 9 Sept 44
North Apennines, 5 Oct 44 / 4 Apr 45
Po Valley, 5 Apr 45 / 8 May 45.
He was qualified to receive campaign stars for NA and PV.
The division was advancing through the Dolomite Alps
toward Innsbruck, Austria, when the German forces in
Italy surrendered, 2 May 45, ending hostilities in the division's area.
Location at war's end, 15 Aug 45, Desenzano, Italy.
The 88th was in occupation in Treste, Italy, after our part of the war ended, 2 May 45.
I don't know if or when it rotated back to the states.
As for the unit identification he was discharged under, I would assume that this was a matter of convenience...that unit was headed home, and he was probably piggy-backed for transport.
Please let me know if the information fits the profile you have developed for your step-father...OK???
