I was helping my 3rd grader with a Veteran's Day project which involved interviewing a veteran and doing research on their military experience.
Through a search engine I was lead to this site. The veteran we interviewed is a friend of our family and he is also close to 80 years old but very sharp-memoried.
He was on the SS Mormachawk during World War II.He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, went to Newport News, VA for training and then by train across country to San Fransisco where he was assigned to the Mormachawk. The ship immediately went to the South Pacific. They were a converted tanker (troopship) and carried men and supplies, but also saw action and provided artilery cover for embarking troops.
Some of the islands they went to were: Midway New Herbides Solomons Admiralties New Guinea Okinawa Japan
This veteran was in the Navy from September 1942 to January 1946.With the exception of a few months on an aircraft carrier he stayed with the Mormachawk his entire service.
Hope this helps you even though I realize your original message was posted 4 years ago.Maybe it will help someone else, too.
