As indicated by the nomenclature, BATES was a destroyer escort (and wouldn't in any case have been a submarine). Also, I find nothing on a BATES being recently decommissioned. By odd coincidence, someone recently requested information on USS MORRIS (DD-417), making reference to info regarding USS DANIEL T. GRIFFIN (APD-38) submitted a while back (posting #1139). On 6 April 1945, BATES assisted DANIEL T. GRIFFIN in screening MORRIS and in taking off survivors. BATES fell victim to kamikaze attack on 25 May, incurring extensive damage. BATES was towed to anchorage at Ie Shima in the Ryukyus and capsized and sank soon after arriving. Your uncle was one of 21 crewman who disappeared with out a trace. His name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
