The Bronze Star was awarded for either meritorius service or for valor in a battle. I have my husband's. The back of it has the words for meritorious service or valor. The V device was not in effect until after WWII. I can not find the date that it was authorized. The only way one could know why the Medal was awarded would be by the "citation" or the order which bestowed it. In the case of my husband some one has typed the citation and included that paper with the award. I also have a copy of the General Order which bestowed the Medal. It was not awarded by his battalion but by V Corp. The battalion was under V Corp.
I am quite sure no list of recipients exists. There would have been a great many of them.
Meritorius Service was usually service listed with the exact dates covering a rather lenfthy period of time. Though I have seen an order that gave a meritorios award for 1 day only.
