This is a good question. Have you located any information on it. I had a nephew who, on the day he received his orders to go overseas, found that he just could not face being killed or killing others. So, instead of boarding the plane that would take him to his overseas destination, he went home to his wife. He surely knew he would be found again. And, I guess he was. But, he was not locked up, for any length of time, anyway. I do know that he was out and going on about life after some time. In 1985 he was killed in an automobile accident. I don't blame any young man for not going to war.
