Around the beginning of World War II the army "triangularized" divisional structure - the number of infantry regiments assigned to a division was reduced from four to three. Most of the "extra" regiments were disbanded but a few were reassigned as other divisions were activated for wartime service. The 324th Infantry was relieved from the 81st Division and assigned to the 44th Division. The 44th served in the European Theater (four campaign credits: Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace & Central Europe). Staff Sergeant Adam Harris was assigned to Company E, which was an element of the regiment's 2d Battalion. That's about all I can tell you without some specific dates on Harris' service. Harris' individual service record was destroyed in the '73 fire. That's no problem, there's an abundance of information available from other sources. The problem is it's becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to access these sources. Your best bet for FREE information is the message boards but don't expect anything substantial.
