Look at Message Number 206 on this same forum.Do not be confused by the title which refers to finding records for Marines.Toward the bottom of the page the message tells how to get various Army records besides the service record.

I would think if he was in Italy in that timeframe he most probably was 5th Army; but, I don't know for sure.That is where my father was and he was 5th Army.By the grace of God, he was able to return home.
