My grandfather, Carl "Charley" Kalus fought with the 257th C Company during World War II.
When he arrived in Europe, he was in Bristol England. He then went to Wallingford England, which is outside of London.
I know for sure that he was in France and Germany. In Germany, I know for sure that he was at Dachau. He said the 257th didn't get any further into Germany than Frankfurt before the end of the war.
He was sent back to the States, I believe he said New York, then Fort Dix NJ.
My grandfather was an operator...he once told a story about running a bulldozer in the dead of night, another soldier holding a flashlight so he could see what he was doing because they wouldn't dare use the headlights on the dozer.
I know that he and other members of the 257th built bridges across the Rhine. For at least some of the time, my grandfather said they were attached to the 45th Infantry Division.
