Hello Mary, Surprise....I'm still kicking! I imagine that transportation in France after Dec 17 was one hell of a mess.That/s when the German army...a magnificent machine...showed their might in the Ardennes breakthrough and almost turned the war around.
In a raid on Dortmund, in the Ruhr valley my B-24 was shot up so badly that we crash landed somewhere near St. Quintinand slept in an old Chateau that reputedly was Rommel's HQ during his romp through France. Transportation was evidently on the ball because a semi pulled up in the morning and took us to an old Luftwaffe fighter base where we were to be flown back to NE England. I was late getting down to the flight line and when I arrived my crew (six of them) were cramming into a C-67 monoplane. My navigator said "we just missed a ride". I replied "I'm not going to get in that damn thing" They took off and crashed about 10 minutes later....all killed.Les
