I now have further information about my uncle, Howard F. Dolphin, killed in action in December 1944.
I contacted the St. Louis Records Center (they mentioned medals he may have qualified for) and also was able to get in touch with the Department of the Army in VA, who kindly made available to me his IDPF file.
Now that I have that file, I can tell you that he was a PFC (Serial No. 17170453) in Company G, 398th Infantry (Army) and was killed around December 4, 1944 (his remains were returned home in 1948), in a place called Puberg, France (which, I believe is in the Alsace region). He was temporarily buried in in the Hochfelden Cemetery.
My childhood recollection is of being told he was killed in the Battle of the Bulge -- I am not certain if the above referenced site was part of that or not.
As you probably know, the IDPF file does not provide any historical details surrounding the battle in which Howard was killed or any other details regarding his service and how to determine what or if he was awarded any medals.
If the information I now have is useful and if you could then supply me with other places to look for the rest of the "story", I would be most appreciative.
