In the Pacific Theater men often lay dead in unknown and/or hard to reach places. The military has an ongoing program to seek out the remains of our troops wherever they are. Some are found quickly some not for decades. Also, war dead must be buried as soon as possible. Because the pacific war was fought on islands our dead lay scattered in small and large plots. At the end of the war the military designated a few permanent cemeteries and brought all the remains to those places.
