Hi,Ok...I am looking at the list of "Medics" that are shown in the history of the 778th AAA Bn.It shows there are Staff Sgts (3 of them), Tech 3's (1 of them), Tech 4's (1 of them), Corporals(3 of them), Tech 5's (7 of them), Private First Class' (2 of them) and Privates (3 of them). Some of them had a * by their names which evidently denotes "non-Combat with detachment".To me, and I am just guessing, those with the * did not go out with the Batteries but remained behind to help the surgeons.By no means am I an expert but that is my take on it.
One of the Tech 5's listed in my book is someone I met at the 778th reunion in September and he does not have the * by his name.See what you can find out about the 436th from Mr. Nelson. If he can't help you, maybe I can get this person to tell me how the medics came to be for a battalion.
I think if you get in contact with Mr. Nelson, he will be your best source of information. At least I hope he can help you.I understand your wanting to know about the history of your uncle. It took me a year to get most of the information on him.
Have you tried getting your Uncle's enlistment/discharge information from the State Archives of the state he enlisted in?Also, try the County Clerk of the county/state he enlisted in.
If he had a military funeral, try the VA, the Sexton of the Cemetery, and the funeral home. They should have information if so. Do you have your Uncle's ASN number? If not, provide me his name, where he was from and his year of birth and I'll see if I can get it for you but no guarantees.
I have some history on the 436th too if you are interested. The book I have shows them as an Antiaircraft Artillery Missile Battalion. If you do want the information, send me a message using my email address
