Staff Sgt. George Wagner Byler: Killed in action while serving as a Gunner with the Eight Air Force near Schleswig, Germany, May 19, 1943. The Naval installations at Kiel were the target when His plane was shot down. Seven crew members were killed and three were taken prisoners of war. He had flown nine missions and was credited with four to five enemy planes when the crew made its final run over Kiel. The seven from the wreckage of the bomber were buried at Schleswig and later moved to Belgium after the war ended. His body was later shipped to New York and on to Ballinger for burial.
He has a marker in the Ballinger Cemetery next to his parents. It reads:
Staff Sgt. George Wagner Byler Lost in combat on 9th mission while serving with the 8th AAF in European Theater.
