My grandfather, Wm A. "Bill" Goad was in the 40th Battalion of the Navy Seabees. They mainly were in the South Pacific. Some of the places I remember being mentioned are: New Guinea, Solomon Islands,Admiralty Islands, New Caledonia,New Hebrides (not sure I spelled that last one correctly). He was one of the older ones of the group as he was over 40 yrs of age, when he enlisted. Several of the men in his group were the same age as his sons.
Several of these men came to my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary in June 1975 just months before he died of lung cancer. This meant a lot to us and to my grandfather. I heard many of them say thank you for being my "Dad" when we were overseas. He apparently was a mentor to several of them--teaching them mechanics. Some of them came from CA, FL and VA to be there in person. It was touching to hear some of their stories. Too bad video cams came out years later. I would have loved to get some of them on tape.
I'd love to hear from anyone from that battalion or their familes. Bill Goad was from Mangum, Greer Co, OK. That is in the southwest part of Oklahoma. Clive Thrower was also stationed in this area too but in a different battalion of the Navy Seabees. He was a brother in law to Bill Goad.
