I am pleased to submit the following:
It appears that the 188th FA BN sailed with the 8th Infantry Division as an attached element.
Their ship MAY have been the EXCELSIOR, which departed
NYPE 12-5-43, and arrived Belfast, Ireland, 12-15-43.
OR,it may have been on a second unnamed ship which also carried elements of the 8th ID, which sailed/arrived on the
same dates, arriving in Belfast same day.
As noted before, the 188th was attached/assigned to senior units as needed.
I can identify several assignments:
Eighth Infantry Division;
26 Nov 44/11 Dec 44;
8 Feb 45/25 Feb 45.
Their senior elements in this period included:
19 Nov 44, V Corps, 1st Army, 12th Army Group;
3 Feb 45, VII Corps, 1st Army, 12th A/G.
The command posts for the senior units included:
19 Nov 44, Ertermeter, Rhineland, Germany;
16 Jan 45, Gorshiaci, R.G.;
10 Feb 45, Merode, R/G.;
25 Feb 45, Durilcen, R/G..
Ninth Infantry Division;
19 Sep 44/4 Oct 44;
VII Corps, 1st Army, 12th A/G;
Command Post locations;
23 Nov 43, Wincester, England;
1 Aug 44, Mariguy, Manche, France;
2 Aug 44, LaVentre,(1/4 mi.SE), Manche, France.
You can expand this series by going to
Start with 1st ID, drop down to Assignments/Attachments, Field Artillery, look for 188th FA BN listings.
If you don't pick it out, move on to the next division, etc..
Let me know how you make out...OK?
