I was with the 99th division during the Bulge. We had just arrived on line from England 4 Nov 1944. In mid Dec, we were supporting an attack by the veteran 2nd divison on pill-boxes of the Siegfried line. When all hell broke loose 16 Dec 1944, we were stuck out ripe fpr capture. We luckily, and thanks to the 2nd division, barely made it back to the defenses on Elsenborn Ridge.
The 1st Inf. division was in a rest area and was called up to help defend Elsenborn Ridge. In my area, we saw no real 'battle" - just artillery firing thousands of rounds. I had my 20th birthday 9 Jan 1945 on Elsenborn Ridge. Not too long after, we crossed the Remagen bridge under fire.
