Since he died in a VA hospital, you might contact the VA and will probably be able to obtain some information about him as they should have records since he met the criteria to be accepted into that hospital.Also, if he had a military funeral, contact the Sexton of the Cemetery and the funeral home as they should have some information as well.
Also, try contacting the State Archives of the state he enlisted in and/or where he ended up residing after the war.They may have his full enlistment information and his discharge information if he registered it with them.County Clerk's of the state(s) may also be someone to contact.
And if he belonged to any military groups like the VFW, they may have information as well.
If he has a sibling living, you may be able to obtain his records from the NPRC.Complete the Standard Form 180 and gather as much information as you can before submitting it.If no sibling is living, send them in anyway.
