EUGENE M. "GENE" WHEELER, 84, of Huntington, W.Va., husband of Marjorie Bartee Wheeler, died Monday in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born in Huntington, on December 29, 1923, son of Emmett V. and Avis Cutler Wheeler. He retired from the Huntington Fire Department as City Fire Marshal with the rank of Captain. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was an Electrical Specialist and Central Fire Instructor on B-29 Bombers. He received the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement while on a B-29 Training Flight that crashed. He was a member of Crescent Lodge #32 AF&AM Ceredo, W.Va., and Marcum Chapter OES #61 Ceredo, W.Va. His parents and his sister, Lois Hall, preceded him in death. In addition to his wife, his son Brad Wheeler and his wife Tracie, two grandsons Jake and Ben, a host of family and friends and a special companion, Squeaky, survive him. Pastor Steve Grimes will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. Friday at Reger Funeral Chapel, Huntington. Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
