Google or Yahoo search fro WWII V MAil and you should get many explanations - I recall that V-mail involved microfilming or somehow shrinking the the orignial document, transporting the resulting small film cartridge overseas, and then re-printing from the microfilm. Your problem is probably the case of ink and paper fade with age. I am old enough to remember where I was on Dec 7, 1941.
