I found an M. R. Whyte of Sweetwater, Texas (born 1915, died 1991) and another of Arkansas City, Kansas (born 1916, died 1980). Both lived in California prior to retirement. I ordered records on both but I'll try to cancel after the holiday. Too much speculation here. 347th Engineers participated in Normandy Campaign but didn't take part in the Invasion. ". . . blowing up and building bridges . . ." normally falls within the duties of combat engineers. He may have been member of 1st Engineer (Combat) Battalion. I think I'll pass on this one. Perhaps later if you can determine what unit he was with or develop some other solid info. Don't expect much from Turner; the extent of his info on the 347th Engineers is contained in five lines on page 550 of Stanton's Order of Battle. Suggest you spend a little time at your local public library.
