Re Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry. 14th Infantry was an element of 71st Infantry Division. The division arrived in France in February 1945 and is credited with having participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns (your grandfather's eligibility for either or both would depend on his dates of service with the regiment and would have to be determined from official records). His having been assigned to Headquarters Company would indicate he held a non-combattant billet and, if so, probably saw no combat. To determine what individual actions he MIGHT have taken part in would require (1) determining his dates of service with the regiment and (2) a systematic check of operational records of the entire period he served with the regiment to determine all actions in which his battalion took part during that period.
