My father was on the USS Blackhawk and as far as I know it was not destroyed in the war. I have a portrait of the whole crew on deck which I'm working on getting scanned. It's a very large picture with an odd size so I have had to scan it several times. I'm in the process of trying to piece it together as one picture.
This is the caption that's on the picture:
CO. 1928 - G.A. Rydout - SP. 2/C (A) CO. Comdr. - Jan. 24, 1944. U.S. Naval Training Station - Great Lakes, IL.
I hope this may help. My sister & I have been working on our genealogy for some time. Recently I've had a spark in me to learn more about the USS Blackhawk and what life on a navy ship was like. I found some Reunion info at http://www.vets.org/Navy.htmhttp://www.vets.org/Navy.htm but have not followed up. You'll understand when you visit the site.
I hope this can get you started on your search. If you find any more info please pass it on.
