"One or two hours from Camp Pendleton . . . in or near the desert . . ." sounds like Twenty-nine Palms, but Twenty-nine Palms was a Naval Air Station during the war. Also, he was either an MP (4th Military Police Company) or a "grunt" (23d Marines) - possibly both but unlikely. A lot of confusion here.
