Everything I have on Dachau suggests it was a concentration camp. If so, it's unlikely he'd have been confined there (the Germans pretty much stuck to the Rules of the Geneva Convention - at least to a lot greater extent than the Japanese). Newspapers have long been notorious for getting the facts garbled, anyway.
If the news item you refer to names the unit he was serving with at the time of his capture, you might be able to contact someone who served with him prior to his capture through that unit's veterans association. It's a long shot but it's possible.
