The division, under command of Major General Alexander A. Vandegrift, reinforced by elements of 2d Marine Division, landed at Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Florida and Gavavutu - in the British Solomon Islands - on 7 August 1942.
During the slightly more than two months that followed, the division was joined by the remainder of 2d Marine Division, service and support elements from Fleet Marine Force, Pacific (FMFPac) and First Marine Amphibious Corps (I MAC), the Americal Infantry Division and the 25th Infantry Division.
The division was withdrawn by increments starting 9 December 1942.
Try your local public library for historical information on the division as well as the Guadalcanal Campaign (you might also look through your Dad's things to see if he had a copy of THE OLD BREED).
