The 717th Railway Operating Battalion, Transportation Corps, was organized at New Orleans, Louisiana 1 December 1943. Trained on equipment of the Pennsylvania Railroad until departing the United States for England (personnel only) in May 1944.
Trained to operate European railway equipment in England. Companies and detachments performed rail service duties, transporting personnel, equipment and materiel simultaneously in England and France throughout the remainder of the war. No decorations or campaign credits.
Battalion returned to the United States in November 1945 and was inactivated at Camp Myles Standish, Massachusetts the following month.
