Sorry that I transmitted information you already had in hand.
Perhaps I can still expand your horizon a little by the following reference:
The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment,
82nd A/B Division, parachuted south of the Sele River, near Salerno, Italy, 13 Sep 43;
the 505th PIR parachuted near the Sele,
14 Sep 43;
the division fought toward Naples, 1 Oct 43;
the division occupied Naples, 2 Oct 43, and remained there on security duty.
The next recorded combat activity involved the 504th PAR , which captured Gallo, Italy, 29 Oct 43, almost three weeks to the day after Wm. died, 7 Oct 43.
One would have to assume that he died in or near Naples during the division's occupation of the city, perhaps by sniper fire, since Naples had been "secure" as early as
2 Oct 43.
The sniper bit is speculation, but the engagements are factual.
