My Uncle was also KIA at Sipan July 11, 1944. I was born after the war and our Family was told that he died on a hospital ship. I've learned here on genealogy forum ~ that may just be a "family story." He is also memorialized at the Tablets of the missing near Honolulu. And Yes, it is a beautiful place! I've been there twice. My Uncle was very young (19.) When my own son left in 1994 at 19-years-old to serve in a very "SAFE" Okinawa Japan.. I'll say my heart ached for what my Grandmother must have felt as she sent her youngest son overseas to fight in a horrible war.
