My grandmother's brother, Admiral Harold Sloop Berdine, was Commander of the US Coast Guard Cutter Spencer. Its sister ships were the Hamilton-class cutters Bibb, Campbell, Duane, Hamilton, Ingham, and Taney. All were assigned to the North Atlantic run as escort ships for US convoys in 1943. The Spencer was responsible for sinking two U-boats and, along with the Duane, picked up German survivors. You can read a little more about these ships in the book "Bloody Winter," by Captain John M. Waters, Jr., USCG, D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., 1967.
