While I have been reluctant to step into this particular mine field, I should point out to the uninitiated that securing the IDPF/293 File should only be a stepping off point.
IDPFs contain information from numerous sources relating to the deceased service person.It is not unknown that material in the IDPF can also be contradictory and particularly confusing to a novice. Just because it is in the IDPF DOES NOT make it true, factual or correct.
They can also be tremendously disappointing if--after waiting 18 months for delivery--they arrive as a single page cover letter, or with inconclusive, form-letter oriented material.
Ms. Gilpin is on the right track here finding out as much as she possible can about the unit.
