The history (and movements) of Company E - and the entire 2d Battalion for that matter - may not parallel the activities of the regiment. Subordinate units underwent periods of detached service from time to time. A concise, general history of the regiment follows (no mention of duty in San Antonio but that may have been company or battalion only):
World War II: activated at Corps of Engineers Training Center, Camp Claiborne, near Alexandria, Louisiana 19 April 1943. Overseas October 1943 (departed Halifax, Nova Scotia 31 October). Arrived in England where regiment re-equipped and trained prior to landing in France 28 August 1944. Returned to the United States in July 1945. Stationed at The Engineer Center, Fort Belvoir, Virginia until inactivated 25 October 1945. No decorations. Three campaign participation credits: Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace & Central Europe.
