Greetings and Happy New Year, Sarah Olson !
(Not THE Mrs.Olson ???)
Your grandfather's unit was a part of the
Fourth Armored Division, which was activated 15 Apr 41, at Pine Camp, NY.
Following training,the division departed Boston P/E,
29 Dec 43;
arrived England, 11 Jan 44;
arrived France-ETO, 13 Jul 44;
entered Luxembourg, 9 Feb 45;
entered Germany, 9 Mar 45.
Ardennes-Alsace(Battle of the Bulge)
It entered combat 28 Jul 44, and was on the line 230 days,during which it had these casualties:
Killed in Action, 1,143
Wounded in Action, 4,551
Died from Wounds, 213,
for a casualty rate of about 50%.
Location at war's end, 15 Aug 45, Landshut, Germany.
It was the 4th A/D which broke thru the encirclement and broke the German seige at Bastogne, in the Battle of the Bulge, on 26 Dec 44.
I hope this little bit of insight helps you in your quest.
Feel free to get back to me if I can be of further service.
You don't say, but I hope that Mr.Corcoran is alive and well.
With best regards,
Louie F. Turner.
