Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, my father died in 1990 of ALS - so not in a military cemetery. He had no discharge papers or anything of any kind at that time when I went through his things.I think his ex-wife had thrown away everything! (My brother said that he had brought back a Japanese weapon and cartridge from New Guinea or the Philippines.) Last March I sent in the correct form to St. Louis and have received no reply from them. They have not replied, which is very frustrating. I know many records were lost in a fire. So my leads are pretty weak.
For some reason The Fifth Air Force sounds right. Maybe I had heard that somewhere but I am not sure. I recall that my father said he was very excited about going on leave to Australia - but someone stole all his money(earnings from playing poker!)and he couldn't go. He had been trained stateside to do bombsight repair - but the type of sight he was trained to repair was already obsolete(or at least a different type of plane) by the time he got to the Pacific.
Do you happen to know the websites for the Thirteenth or Fifth Air Force?
Thank you for your helpful reply. Sincerely, Katherine
