Dear Fred, Thank you so very much for you thoughtfulness in sending me a copy of that poem.It did remind me of when my husband wrote letters home about time he spent on some of those Pacific Islands.Although he didn't say too much, you could read between the lines, and know the misery he went through.
The islands he mentions in his letters, were:Abemama, (or Apamama),Baker, Eniwetok, Kwajalein, Bougainville, and Saipan. He also mentions New Guinea, but I don't think he made it there. He was trained in San Diego, CA, and then in Pearl Harbor, before he made the invasions.I have a little diary he kept, but it is very fragile, and hard to read.I've tried to transcribe it on the computer. But there are a couple of pages I just can'tdecipher.
I know that you said your uncle won't talk about the war, but do you think he would share any experiences of his time on Bougainville?I would love to hear anything at all.
I will send you an e-mail, and maybe you could ask him. Many thanks.Ms. Dorothy Newmandnewman7@earthlink.net
