Dossenheim, Germany Co. I, 144 Infantry
David Baugh 6/15/98
It was the morning of March 29, 1945. Just outside of the town of Dossenheim, Germany. Company I of the 44 Infantry, while advancing on the town of Heidelberg, ran up against a force of over 300 Germans who were entrenched in well dug positions. Company I fought savagely, and frantically against a determined enemy that spayed the ground with raking machine gun fire and 20 millimeter flak guns. It was on this day that young Howard Leroy Baugh, only 19 years old, would pay the ultimate price.Young Baugh, refusing to listen to the advise handed out by Sgt. Sudhoff to stay down, instead standing up behind a tree while spraying the enemy with BAR fire until a 20 millimeter shell killed him outright. Anyone with information about this please contact me. This was my uncle.
Thanks to JJ for bring the error to my attention.
