Glen Smith, October 19,1944

By genealogy.com user March 17, 2002 at 03:47:25

I am hoping someone can help me. I am looking for anything that may help me learn more about my grandmother's brother. His name was Glen Smith and he served in WWII. His plane went down over Germany on October 19, 1944. From the letter I have from a crew mate I know they were bombing marshalling yards in Mainz, Germany that day. As they were getting ready to drop the bombs they had problems. Another plane slid over top of them. From what I can tell Lt. Rath or Lt. Aiken was the pilot. From pictures we have discovered that they were using a B-24. The person who wrote the letter said he thought the plane crashed in the vicinity of Spyer, Germany.

I have gone to a website that had the same mission or the same day except were the times were different than the letter and the website said all planes landed safely. Is there a chance that more than one group had the same mission on the same day? If anyone has any leads they would be greatly appreciated!
