You are looking for 168th Infantry Regiment,
34th Infantry Division.
I refer you to my post #6124 in this forum, which will provide you some background on the unit.
Leading up to the date of Virgil's death...
The Germans had moved out of Rome 4/5 Jun 44, and were in retreat to their Gothic Line fortifications, located above Florence.
25 June 44:
The 36th ID (IV CORPS) captured Piombino Harbor, without resistance;
the 34th ID replaced the 36th ID on line in the Tyrrhenian sector, and crossed the River Cecina, 26 Jun 44;
27 Jun 44, the German Tenth Army was in general retreat from the Albert Line;
the Amercan IV CORPS, with the 34th ID on the left, advanced along Highway 68, which ran parallel to the
River Cecina, 28 Jun 44;
units of the 34th ID are heavily engaged by the German
16th Panzergrenadire SS, near Cecino, 29 Jun 44.
Based on the above, I would assume that Virgil was KIA on the approach to Cecina.
I hope this helps.
Louie F. Turner.
