My father, then Pfc Fred Newell 36 022 084 fought in the battle on Attu Island May 1943. He was attached to the 17th Infantry, Company A. On May 25th 1943 army forces to which he was attached attacked a pass on Attu Island. He was wounded in the leg by a Japanese sniper and was pinned down for 6 hours till dark when he could get back to his unit. For his involvement in the battle,He was awarded the Bronze Star, The Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart. My father would not talk about his war time experiences and I would like to know the circumstances of why he was given these medals. In 2001 I wrote the Veterans Administration and was informed the records needed to answer my questions were destroyed in a fire in 1973.
