Biloxi is home to Keesler Air Force Base which was originally Army Air Corps during WWII with a lot of basic training. My father was here in the Air Corps but was sent to Infantry like many others because there were too many men in the Air Corps. He ended up serving as MacArthur's private receptionist in Australia and then on to New Guinea. 12 miles down the coast is Gulfport where a second Army Air Corps Field was operational. It is now a municipal airport and Air National Guard. Biloxi also had Coast Guard unit here in WWI and sunk a German U-boat off shore. Navy had training facility in Gulfport where the current VA hospital is, also there is a SeaBee base in Gulfport now and navy shipyard at Pascagoula. Lots of soldiers here in WWII at Keesler judging from the pictures here.
