I was cadre at the Field Artillery Training Center, Fort Sill, OK, awaiting "my turn", which came 15 Jan 45, when I boarded theGENERAL W.P. RICHARDSON, bound for Italy, arriving with 5,000 others, 25 Jan 45, after which I served in the 985th Field Artillery Battalion, II CORPS, Fifth Army.
Our original orders were to enter Belgium as replacements at the Battle of the Bulge. We "lucked out" when that siege was lifted, and we were re-routed to the Italian campaigns.
My complements and a salute to ALL veterans, living and dead !.
