Help locating WW#2 friend

My friend served in the Normandy conflict in 1944 participating in the areas of Valognes,Briquebec,Montebourg
St. Sauveur,and Hay du Puits

His unit was recorded as: 1ere.-79eme.-7eme corps.
His verifier is #709.77.91.82.3.4.eme

I have his name but do not know if he is still alive and if so, do not know his residence.

Can anyone determine what branch of the army he was in and how I could get his status from the information listed above?Thanks, R.L. Hamel
