I am looking for info about my father, Zay Bud Smith.I have very little information about him, as he died in a private plane crash when I was only six years old (1961).From an old letter, dated 9-15-42, he gave his address:
Sgt Zay B. Smith 18018105 352 Service Sqd 39 Service Group A.A.F. A.P.O. No. 3085 o/o Postmaster New York City, New York
I know that he was stationed in the southern part of England, but know little else. There is a story (not verified as most of the family is no longer living) that at one time he was flying a C-47, and had just unloaded men and cargo somewhere in Belgium.Just after take-off, they were shot down. There were supposed to be 10 men on board, but only my dad and possibly one other man survived. When dark came, a farmer came and found him where he was hiding, and hid him in a cellar for about two weeks. After the two weeks another man came with bicycles and he followed him...don't know where, but was able to get back somehow.
I would appreciate any help in finding out more about where he would have been stationed, and if there is anyone left living who would have known him. Thanks!
